Peace & Justice

The Hague is the International Capital of Peace & Justice dotted with over 180 international organisations. Together they strive for a safer and more peaceful world. They aim to prevent and solve (global) conflicts. The track record goes back as far as 1913, when the Peace Palace opened. Nowadays, The Hague is the seat of the permanent Court of Arbitration and the city also hosts the International Court of Justice. This is where thousands of specialists in international law and governance share their expertise. And with the continuous influx of new IOs and NGOs, this number is rising. We look forward to welcoming new organisations to contribute to this international hub of peace and justice.

The Hague, home of international law

In and around The Hague you will find a vast network of organizations dealing with peace and justice such as:

  • The Hague Institute for Global Justice (THIGJ)
  • Clingendael, a renowned think tank and expertise centre)
  • The Knowledge Platform Security & Rule of Law
  • NATO CIMIC Centre of Excellence
  • Centre for Innovation - Leiden University
  • Knowledge centers like HiiL or The Hague Humanity Hub.

All this makes The Hague the hot spot for gaining and sharing knowledge and to get in touch with valuable networks.

Former projects in the Hague

In the past few years, The Hague has hosted several international summits dealing with peace, justice and governmental issues:

  • Afghanistan Summit (2009)
  • Nuclear Security Summit (2014)
  • Global Conference on Cyber Space (2015)
  • Global Parliament of Mayors (2016)

“We have been amazed by the degree of professional support and encouragement we have received from the City of The Hague and its partners like The Hague Business Agency. It underscores to us that we have made a great decision to join the vibrant international community in The Hague.”

- Juergen Schurr, Head of Law and Policy at REDRESS -

The Hague: the forefront in peace & justice

New technologies pave the way for innovations in the field of peace and justice. It is getting easier to share ideas and insights and to learn from data – like The Hague Humanity Hub. This provides a unique platform for inspiration, cooperation, and co-creation. It aims to become the world’s leading innovation space for peace and justice. The Hub will host corporations, small and large non-profits, international organisations such as UNOCHA, networks such as HumanityX (big data for peace and justice initiative) and the Dutch Coalition for Humanitarian Innovation. It functions as an accelerator for start-ups. A complete new venture is the establishment of a ‘The Hague Hearing Centre’, meant for commercial dispute resolution through mediation and arbitration. This new centre is proof of the ambition to stay in the forefront of this sector.

Cyber security

Peace, justice and security go hand in hand. Therefore, this is the home of the The Hague Security Delta, the largest leading security cluster of Europe. In this Dutch cluster –with important regional hubs in The Hague, Twente, and Brabant– businesses, governments, and knowledge institutions work together on innovations and knowledge in the field of cyber security, national and urban security, protection of critical infrastructure, and forensics. They share a common goal: more business activity, more jobs and a secure world -
