Third harbour for maritime businesses in Scheveningen

The Third Harbour in Scheveningen, located on the former Norfolk terrain, will be redeveloped into a combination of homes and space for maritime services. The Municipality of The Hague and MRP Development signed an agreement to develop the area on 21 November.

The construction of the first apartment buildings in the Third Harbour are planned for the 4th quarter of 2018. Approximately 3,500 square metres on the ground floor of the 3 apartment buildings will be reserved as commercial space for people who earn their living in the maritime industry.

According to Deputy Mayor Karsten Klein (Economic Affairs, Harbours, Welfare and Health), ‘I am very pleased with this agreement, especially because we are adding new commercial space directly on the wharf. It is located at a spot in the harbour suitable for larger sailing boats. The Municipal Executive has agreed to focus more on the harbour’s economic position and to work towards creating more harbour-related employment. The stress will be on favourable sectors for Scheveningen: fishing, water sports and port services such as offshore support and innovation.’

Klein is hoping that more maritime start-ups will decide to locate in the Third Harbour. ‘I welcome innovative companies which will use Scheveningen as a base for their work at sea. We already have a seaweed cultivation farm and The Ocean Cleanup. But, for example, companies which would like to extract energy from the sea or produce medicine from algae could also make their home here.’
